I’d like to say it’s when I first understood that a vinyl record has sound forms in the grooves. It’s the most interesting art piece ever designed. It’s what NASA asked Carl Sagan to curate for inclusion in the Voyager space probe, should it be encountered by an unknown civilization. But truthfully I only found that out about 13 years ago.
I get off on design but I never really laid it down as my manifesto. I was on a law school track at university, took some art classes and started creating inhabitable space. My sculpture professor suggested architecture school. I had just discovered Baudrillard and that slew and I wanted some time to research and think. So I went. These days I’m obsessed with concepts for development.
My style in three words
Magic is the art of moving energy around…whatever that word is, that’s my style.
Favorite place
My rooftop garden in Chinatown…it has a 360 view circling downtown LA and Dodger Stadium. I’m growing tomatoes and strawberries.
We design for our client’s brand because this is their manifesto of who they are in the world. We look for clients that, like us, seek to create joy and light in what they do.

What’s your dream project
We’re in the initial thinking on a desert guest compound called the Bridge that is the kickoff development of the Institute for Arrival, a foundation created for the advancement of joy. It’s an architectural collective of private and communal spaces, landscape, firepits, pools and kitchens. It’s designed to offer refuge, celebration and quest to an exploratory invited community.
What is your source of inspiration
The desert. And sound. Even better when they’re together.
Favorite place to travel
Mexico… heading to Tulum in a few weeks.
Favorite restaurant
Odys + Penelope in LA – We designed it for Karen and Quinn Hatfield and the AIA/LA awarded it with the nation’s best restaurant design last year.

Favorite project so far
We just completed an exclusive surf lodge on an island in the Ailinglaplap Atoll of the Marshall Islands. It takes me three planes and a boat to get there.

The pool at the Amangiri in Utah is so beautiful but I haven’t been there yet. One of my favorite places I’ve stayed was a ski refuge high up in the Dolomiti. It was something to be isolated so high up above the tree line on the mountain peak….I felt so small and so big at the same time. What a privilege.
